The tan became fashionable with Coco Chanel, who declined to be healthy and fresh appearance of the people living on the French coast to the monotony and rigidity of the Parisians. Chanel did not know that the pale women of Paris were right to avoid the sun.

The sun damages our skin and cause cancer and therefore tans are no longer so fashionable. Celebrities such as Nicole Kidman prefer porcelain skin and keep wrinkles (and cancer) on the sidelines. But no matter when it is preached there are always those wishing to tan. If you’re among this group here are some tips for a less harmful tanning.

As tan

Avoid direct sun times stronger 10:00 a.m. to 3 (or 4) PM. If you’re in the sun at this time use sunscreen to avoid sunburn and stay hydrated by drinking water.

Do not try to burn in one day, do it little by little to get a golden tan rather than burn. The first day passes only half an hour in the sun and gradually increase the time you another few minutes.

The more white your skin unless you have resistance to the sun. But also burned brown skin.

Be sure you are not taking medicines or creams Apply yourself that make you more sensitive to the sun.

Use a proper suntan lotion or cream. It is preferable to use an SPF 8 sunscreen that protects against the burning but please allow the sun to tan.

Use a hat and sunscreen to the face, tan if you’re in the sun even with a bit protective but will be protected from excesses.

Take a water bath at the time to complete your tanning session, if you feel burning, do not use soap. Then apply a cream or gel for after tanning as aloe (Aloe) or calendula to soothe the skin.

If you start to feel a burning or irritation immediately retire to the shade, these are signs of burns and apply your cream of aloe (aloe) or something similar to soothe the skin. If you’re in the water do not feel these symptoms so you need to avoid spending much time indoors.

If your skin is sensitive, is irritated, use retinol, take Accutane (Ro Accutane) avoids tan because it will cause damage to your skin.

If you care bronzes get a better tan that will last longer and prevent skin peeling.

Sun Safety Tips

When you are at the pool or the beach, always cover exposed areas of your body with tightly woven clothing and wear a wide brimmed hat to protect your head and face.

If you’re a parent, be sure to protect your children’s skin as research indicates that one or more severe, blistering sunburns in childhood or adolescence can double the risk of skin cancer later in life.

When applying sunscreen don’t forget the hard to reach area of the upper back, as too often this area is skipped during sunscreen application and what most people don’t realize is that its a common site for melanomas.

Remember to use protection on cloudy days as well, especially since 90% of the sun’s UV rays penetrates the haze of the clouds and the thickness of the air and is also reflected off a lot of things such as water and sand.

Remember that the sun’s rays are the strongest from 10 am to 4 pm, especially during the late spring and summer.

Always apply and remember to reapply a sunscreen/block with a high SPF factor rating.

Reflected glare from water and snow also can increase your exposure to UV radiation.

It is just as equally important to protect your eyes from the sun. Too much UV radiation can damage the cornea and lead to cataracts, which is a clouding of the lens of the eye that can cause blindness.

Not all glasses, tinted or otherwise, including the dark ones can protect against UV radiation. The UV filtration results from an invisible chemical applied to the sunglasses. Check the label when choosing sunglasses in order to make sure that they provide protection against UV radiation.

Take a look at your own skin and compare the areas such as the front of your hands and your face, to areas that are almost never exposed to solar radiation.

The difference in your skin tone, the texture and wrinkles etc, all that you can see are most likely to be caused by exposure to the sun.

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer and approximately 90% of all skin cancers can be traced to UV exposure. Skin cancer most often occurs on the face and almost never on the buttocks, inner thighs or under the arms.

The three main types of skin cancer are melanoma, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Malignant melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer and it’s incidence is rapidly rising in women under 40.

Who is at risk?
Skin cancer can happen to anyone, however the risk is greatest for people who:

burn easily

have fair skin

always burn before tanning

have blonde, red, or light brown hair

have blue, green, or gray eyes

don’t tan easily, but spend a lot of time outdoors

work indoors all week and try to play ‘catch up’ on the weekend

have previously been treated for skin cancer or who have a family history of skin cancer
(if you have a family history of melanoma, see your physician for regular skin exams)

live in or take regular vacations to high altitudes
(Ultraviolet exposure increases with altitude)

Warning signs of skin cancer
As with many cancers, early detection and treatment offers your best chance of remission and survival.
Here are some signs that may indicate skin cancer:

A mole that changes color, textures, grows, becomes irregular in shape or that is bigger than a pencil top eraser.

A spot or growth that continually itches, hurts, becomes crusty, scabs or bleeds.

A skin abnormality that increases in size and appears multicolored, pink, red, black, brown, tan, pearly, translucent or tan.

An open sore that does not heal after 4 weeks or one that heals and reopens.

Regular skin self exams could save an estimated 4,500 lives annually. Anytime you are concerned about a growth or spot on your skin, it is best to seek the advice of your physician.

Skin damage from sunlight builds up with continued exposure, whether sunburn occurs or not. In addition to skin cancer and sunburn, other effects of the sun exposure can include wrinkling, premature aging and in time, an almost leathery like appearance of the skin.

UVA, UVB and UVC are the three different types of rays that our sun produces:

A IS FOR AGEING:
UVA rays penetrate through to the dermis of the skin causing long term cell damage, visible for wrinkles, sagging and ageing.

B IS FOR BURNING:
And cancer too for that matter. UVB rays are carcinogenic and are the cause of instant visible damage, such as sunburn and freckles as well as long term effects such as sun spots and melanomas.

C IS FOR CAUTION:
UVC rays have the potential to be extremely dangerous because of their intensity, but are filtered out by the stratosphere before they get to earth. They pose no real threat unless the ozone layer depletes sufficiently, but that’s another story!

UV Rays
UV or ultraviolet light is the portion of the sunlight spectrum that is particularly harmful to humans. The sun produces at least three types of UV rays being UVA, UVB and UVC. Our ozone layer filters UVC out, so only a negligible amount of UVC reaches the earth’s surface.

UVA, a long wavelength ray, is the predominant UV ray that reaches the earths surface can penetrate the skin and damage connective tissue at deeper levels, even if the skin’s surface feels cool. UVA causes damage to cellular membranes and DNA, and has been implicated in aging of the skin and the development of skin cancer.

It is responsible for some sun induced skin damage, but the actual sunburn is associated with the shorter ultraviolet wavelengths, known as ultraviolet B (UVB). Scientists believe that UVB rays are the primary cause of sunburn, premature aging of the skin, skin cancer, and other sun induced skin problems. It is important to limit exposure to both UVA and UVB.
