Sun worshippers need more than a base tan to protect skin from the damaging effects of UV overexposure.

A person with a base tan can still receive a burning dose of sunlight. To protect the base tan and prevent the damaging effects due to excessive exposure to sunlight, a sunscreen with a moderate SPF level is recommended.

The endorsed level of SPF depends on skin type, the daily UVB rating, and the base tan’s darkness level. According to The Sun tanning Association for Education, SAE, optimum protection from the sun’s rays only comes from educating yourself about how to properly apply sunscreens.

In general, people use only about half the amount of sunscreen they need, and often use an SPF that is too low for their skin type. Sunscreen or sun block should be applied liberally and frequently to the skin before venturing out for a day in the sun.

The FDA (Food & Drug Administration) have concluded that these tanning accelerators are actually unapproved drugs and the agency has issued warning letters to several manufacturers of these products. Unfortunately for sun worshippers there is no scientific data to date showing that they will actually work.
